Viola V. Himsel, 83, Jasper

Viola V. Himsel, 83, Jasper, passed away at 8:29 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2016, in Memorial Hospital & Health Care Center in Jasper.

She was born on November 28, 1933, in Jasper, Indiana to Oscar Sr. and Ellanora (Vonderheide) Recker. She married James C. Himsel on April 17, 1953.

Viola was a caregiver most of her life, taking care of the elderly in the area. She was a social worker in area nursing homes and an emergency medical technician. She was an avid quilter and gifted many quilts to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, James C. Himsel; six daughters, Wanda Haas of Jasper, Mary Hohl of Santa Claus, Angela Himsel Sacks and husband Selig of New York, N.Y., Elizabeth Eblen and husband Doug of Greenwood, Ind., Sarah Burcon and husband David of Ann Arbor, Mich. and Rachael Himsel of Bloomington; sons, James R. Himsel of Jasper, Edward Himsel and wife Kathy of Jasper, Paul Himsel of Terre Haute and John Himsel of Dubois; 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rita Mae Purcell of Sacramento, Calif., Linda Lampert and husband Dennis of Jasper and Susie Leinenbach and husband Pat of Bretzville; one brother, James Recker of Jasper.

Preceding her in death is one daughter, Abby Himsel; two grandchildren, Phillip Haas and Nina Marie Himsel; one brother, Oscar Recker Jr.; and one sister, Shirley Fischer.

Funeral services for Viola Himsel will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 31, 2016, in Redemption Christian Church in Jasper. Burial will follow in Community Cemetery in Haysville, Indiana.

Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the 1:00 p.m. Services at Redemption Christian Church in Jasper.
