In a recent interview with Mr. John Burger, Dubois County Free Press had a chance to ask the Democratic candidate for mayor of Jasper a few questions about his both his background and his hopes for the city’s future.

Looking back on his history in Jasper, Burger claims he is blessed to have both run a business, Burger Farms, and raised a family in such a fine community. His wish is to ensure that others in Jasper are afforded the same chance to enjoy the quality of life he has.

Asked about the tax abatements that were recently approved for Jasper, Burger claims he is in support of property tax abatements. He goes on to describe the passing of similar business incentives he was previously involved with at the county level. However, Burger admits to having real concerns about local income tax abatements that have been proposed, but not yet approved. His fear is that without sufficient guidelines as to how the abatement money can be spent by businesses, that it might be spent frivolously and not make its way back to benefit Jasper’s workers.

Burger recounts his experiences in dealing with business crises where he had to both find adaptive solutions, make tough decisions, and provide for the well-being of his employees. Burger states that he intends to take a similar protective attitude toward the city of Jasper and the welfare of its residents, declaring the availability of “good-paying jobs” to be a priority.

When questioned about the relevance of party politics to his potential administration, Burger admits to coming from a family of registered Democrats stretching back generations. However, he says, this is not something that will play a part in his decision-making process. Burger believes citizens will elect him to make choices based on what he believes is right, rather than a set of rigid party principles. He promises to represent everyone in Jasper, regardless of their affiliations, stating that it is his intent to take a “middle-of-the-road” approach and listen to the citizens wishes. Burger hopes that even Republicans will consider voting for him based on the potential he brings to the table.

Burger believes his experience with running a business and making administrative decisions is a critical quality for a candidate, particularly given the current state of the economy. As a past county councilman and county commissioner; he says he has a proven record of helping keep budgets balanced and being conservative with the taxpayers money. Burger feels this blend of both private and public sector success qualifies him to be Jasper’s mayor.
