Victor J. Knies, 89, Jasper

Victor J. Knies, 89, Jasper, passed away at 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville.

Vic was born in Jasper, Indiana on December 14, 1926 to Joseph and Mayme (Schroering) Knies. He married Monica Mehringer, his wife of 65 years, on October 20, 1951 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, Indiana.

Vic graduated from Jasper High School in 1945. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired after over 35 years in the woodworking industry.  He was a Jasper City Council Member for 28 years and was on the Jasper Board of Public Works for many years. He also served on other various boards and committees through the years. He was very active in the Sister Cities Program.

He and his wife, Monica, were recipients of the Simon Brute Award. He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Frank O’Bannon in 1999. He was also awarded the German Heritage Award in 2009.

He was a member of the K of C #1584 and was a 4th degree knight.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #147, a past member of the Indiana Regional Planning Commission where he was treasurer, the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Holy Family Catholic Church where he was very active in church functions.

He enjoyed traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Monica Knies of Jasper; two daughters, Barb Bleemel and her husband Bob of Jasper and Elaine Knies of Greenwood, Ind.; three sons, Tom Knies of Jasper, Jerry Knies and his wife Chris of Jasper and
Marty Knies and his wife Judi of Greenwood, Ind.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Preceding him in death are one son, Greg Knies; one grandson, Scott Bleemel; five sisters, Catherine Betz, Marie Burger, Delphine Ruhe, Florence Kordes and Loretta Eckert; and seven brothers, Edwin, Henry, Charles, Andrew, Raymond, Oscar and Donald Knies.

Funeral services for Victor J. Knies will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 1, 2016, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, with entombment to follow in the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum in Jasper.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper and one hour before services at the church on Friday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, the St. Meinrad Archabbey, or to a favorite charity.
