Vernon William Stephens, 84, Arthur

Vernon William Stephens, 84, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026, at the Deaconess Gateway Heart Hospital in Evansville.

He lived in Pike County for all 84 years of his life. He had resided in the Arthur community since 1974.

Born November 15, 1941, in Littles, he was the son of Loyd and J. Elizabeth (Libby) Stephens.

Vernon was a graduate of the Winslow High School class of 1958, where he was a member of the Winslow Eskimos basketball team.

Vernon retired from the Indianapolis Power and Light Company as a shift supervisor in 1997, after a 27-year career there. He enjoyed fishing and spending time at his lake home in Kentucky, farming, and rooting for IU basketball and football. Spending time with family was his favorite pastime of all. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren always brought a smile to his face. He was known and loved by many as a kind, caring, and generous man.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruby (Willis) Stephens; a sister, Judy Simpson; a daughter, Amanda Potts and her husband, Shannon; three sons, Vernon Mitchell Stephens and his wife, LeAnn, John Stephens and his wife, Shannon, and Michael Stephens; four grandchildren, Zachary Stephens, Jalen Carter and her husband Travis, Arianna Stephens Contreras, Hallee Miller and her husband Caleb, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd R. Stephens and J. Elizabeth (Libby) Stephens, and two grandsons, Travis Stephens and Chase Stephens.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Harris Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremy Ross officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Hills Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on August 23, 2026.
