Vernon “Cookie” Kimmel, 86, Petersburg

Vernon “Cookie” Kimmel, 86, of Petersburg, formerly of Huntingburg, passed away at 4:20 a.m., Saturday, February 6, 2016, at the Amber Manor Care Center in Petersburg, Indiana.

He was born June 16, 1929, in Evansville, Indiana to George and Beulah (Simpson) Kimmel.  He married Gloria Phelps on June 5, 1958, in Evansville.

Vernon served in the United States Army during the Korean War as an ambulance driver. He retired from Styline where he worked was a furniture craftsman. He was a talented carpenter and enjoyed building different projects around the house.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gloria Kimmel, who died March 8, 2007; one daughter, Rebecca Kimmel; one son, Jake Kimmel; and six siblings, Marge, Beulah, Alberta, Charles, Jake and Tom.

He is survived by four children (one daughter & three sons), Frank (Judy) Kimmel of Huntingburg, Mary (Gerald) Boehman of Jasper, George (Dorothy) Kimmel of Dubois and David (Joyce) Kimmel of Holland; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Vernon “Cookie” Kimmel will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial to follow at Fairmount Cemetery in Huntingburg. Reverend Albert Madden will officiate at the funeral.  Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Jasper American Legion Memorial Detail.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday.
