Brandon M. Eilert, 30, of Velpen, was following an ATV westbound on Oak Street in Velpen at about 5 p.m. when that ATV slowed and he was not able to stop in time to avoid a collision. Eilert was ejected from the ATV and landed on the pavement.

He was airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville Indiana where he was being treated for internal injuries and head trauma. As of this morning Eilert still remained in critical condition.

Neither subject on the ATV that Eilert ran into was injured.

Responding agencies included the Pike County Sheriff’s Department, Pike County EMS, Jefferson Township Fire Department and Indiana Conservation Officers.

Alcohol may have been a contributing factor and protective gear was not worn. The incident is still under investigation.

Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage the use protective gear such as helmets, gloves and chest protectors while operating an ATV.
