VaRena L. Sakel, 87, Huntingburg

VaRena L. Sakel, 87, of Huntingburg, passed away at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at the Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper.

She was born October 23, 1931, in Jasper, Indiana to Gilbert L. and Bessie L. (Key) Emerson. She married Glen Lee “Bud” Sakel on October 8, 1950, at the Huntingburg Methodist Church.

VeRena graduated from Huntingburg High School. She worked as a secretary for Dr. Bretz and as a homemaker. VaRena was a member of the Huntingburg United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, knitting and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen “Bud” Sakel, who passed away on February 18, 2013; her parents; and one son, Bradley Scott Sakel.

She is survived by three daughters, Christie Jane Spear of Unionville, Ind., Lea Ann Liles of Hernando, Mississippi, and Julia Kay Hohl of Huntingburg, Ind.; three siblings, Freda Prior of Huntingburg, Ind., Randall Emerson of Speedway, Ind., and Patricia “Patty” Stetter of Lake Helmerich/Huntingburg, Ind.; by eleven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for VaRena Sakel will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, November 18, 2018, at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial to follow at Fairmount Cemetery in Huntingburg. Reverend Lee Campbell will officiate at the service.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2018. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
