Vanice M. “Van” Smith, age 92, of Cato, passed away at 5:30 a.m., Sunday, April 6, 2014, at his home.

He was born March 26, 1922 in Velpen, Indiana, to Roscoe Martin and Fay (Evans) Smith.

He retired from Brake Supply Company, Inc. in Evansville, where he worked in management for 35 years.

He was united in marriage to Ruby G. Ambrose on February 9, 2002.

Van was a member of the Church of God International when he lived in Marshall, Texas; and was a United States Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Smith, who died April 30, 1999, three children, Nancy Smith, Kenneth Smith, and Elvira Smith, one brother, Aubrey Evans “A.E.” Smith, and two sisters, Fleeta Hayes and infant Darvel Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Gray-Smith of Cato, Ind.; his stepdaughter, Pat LaFollette of Louisville, Ky.; two nieces, Rosemary (Jim) Williams of Illinois, and Sue (Terry) Rothwell of South Dakota; three nephews, Tom (Nancy) Hayes of Illinois, Mitch Smith of California, and Phil Smith of North Dakota;  four stepgrandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Vanice “Van” Smith will be held at 2:00 p.m., EDT, on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial to follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Velpen. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post #2366 Memorial Detail. Reverend Bob Strain will officiate at the services.
