Utility Service Board hears Skyline Neighborhood project update
The Skyline Neighborhood water main project is on track for completion before the July 4th holiday weekend, according to Jasper Utilities General Manager Rob Young.
FER-PAL Infrastructure was contracted to clean and reline the water main lines in the neighborhood after complaints regarding dirty water escalated last year.
Fer-Pal installed a temporary water system to maintain service during the project designed to remedy the problems with the older lines and the pressure changes that led to material being released into the water supplying the homes in the area. Crews are currently in the process of reassembling the water mains and performing chlorination procedures.
Visible progress can be observed throughout the neighborhood, with two or three excavation pits already filled. The remaining pits are scheduled to be completed next week as the project moves toward its final stages.
FER-PAL intends to continue reinstating water meters next week. Their plan includes beginning the dismantling of the temporary water systems, with the goal of completing their on-site work before the Fourth of July weekend.
Following the holiday, project managers plan to conduct a comprehensive post-project review to evaluate the effectiveness of the work and identify lessons learned for future infrastructure projects.
The review will help ensure the utility has a clear understanding of how to utilize similar services effectively in the future. Officials acknowledged that the project has required more staff resources than initially anticipated.
Standard quality testing procedures will be conducted as part of the project completion process to verify that all work meets required specifications.
In addition to the Skyline project update, officials requested approval for Resolution Number USB2025-1, which would establish a $580,00 loan between the Gas and Water Departments to fund the Skyline work.
The resolution is scheduled to appear on the agenda for Wednesday’s council meeting for further consideration.
