Two arrested on several charges after reckless driving report

Jasper — A call about a reckless driver prompted an investigation that ended with two arrests for charges ranging from possession of marijuana to theft Monday evening.

According to police, they received the report of a red passenger car driving recklessly northbound on Meridian coming into Jasper at about 9:15 p.m. A Jasper officer located the vehicle and performed a traffic stop after observing it speeding near Bohnert Park.

During the stop, police determined the driver, Baron S. McCann, 20, of Cedarcrest Court, Jasper, had never received a driver’s license. While police were investigating McCann, the individual who had reported the reckless driving arrived at the scene and told police the individuals in the car had stolen $15 from her in Huntingburg. She had followed the vehicle from there after the incident.

Based on this information and their suspicion that there may be drugs in the car, police asked for and received consent to search the vehicle from the occupants. During the search, officers found a silver pipe containing marijuana residue in the back seat floorboard next to an occupant of the car, Carlos A. Hernandez Castaneda, 19.

Castaneda was arrested for a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana and a Level 6 felony count of possession of paraphernalia. Both charges were elevated due to previous convictions for the same offenses.

While officers were arresting McCann for the never licensed charge, officer reported finding another silver pipe containing marijuana residue on his person. The $15 reported stolen was not found during the arrest, however, when McCann was booked into the Dubois County Security Center, officers found $15 in his left sock.

McCann was charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana, paraphernalia, stolen property and a charge of driver never licensed.

Both men were booked into the Dubois County Security Center.

The Huntingburg Police Department is investigating the theft allegation.
