Tienda Moroleón opens in downtown Jasper

Francisco Guzmán and his son, Jorge and daughter-in-law, Mirabel Guzmán, opened the Tienda Moroleòn in Jasper on Friday.

The new grocery store caters to anyone seeking authentic, quality Hispanic foods at a good price.

“We try to find good providers to be able to offer better prices,” Mirabel explained.

The Guzmáns opened the new grocery store at 415 Mill Street (the former Herald Printing building) to better serve the Jasper community seeking these types of products.

Shelves are stocked with many items that the Guzmáns understand the public is seeking. “We tried to get what people want and need,” Mirabel said.

For example, they were able to source a popular yogurt from Cuba that several people said they were seeking, as well as other items that locals have been unable to find.

Along with shelves of condiments, salsa, canned items, and bags of rice and beans, they carry canned and bottled drinks sourced from Mexico (real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup). They plan on adding freshly baked items, sweet breads and a special line of ice cream — La Michoacana — options soon.

In addition to the groceries, the store will offer prepaid cellphone cards and money transfer services to several countries.

According to Mirabel, though they are now open, they are taking small steps to determine the best way to provide the items their customers are seeking.

“Everyone should come and check out and see the prices,” Mirabel said.

The new store is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The name, Moroleón, refers to the city in Mexico where the family is from. It is located in south-central Mexico in the state of Guanajuato. The background of the new store’s sign features the city’s square with the Catholic Church in the background where Mirabel and Oscar were married 25 years ago.
