Thomas Edwin Pingry, Sr., 87, Ferdinand (Updated)

Thomas E. Pingry, Sr., 87, of Ferdinand, passed away Sunday, July 13th, at his home that he shared with his wife of 42 years, Sheila.

Tom was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, to the late Carl and Imogene Lough Pingry.

Tom grew up loving his country and living life to the fullest. These dual loves coalesced when he graduated from Pittsburgh State University in 1959 as a second lieutenant in the United States Army.

Tom’s military career spanned more than 20 years and saw him rise to the rank of lieutenant Colonel. A proud infantry officer, he led from the front with courage, humility and an unwavering sense of purpose. Tom could be best described as a soldier’s soldier. As a Green Beret, Tom served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded two Bronze Stars for Valor.

He loved those whom he served and those he was entrusted to lead. After retiring from the military, Tom earned two master’s degrees in computer and data management.

From flying his beloved planes to tinkering with the latest technology to earning his amateur radio license in his 20s, Tom’s life was full of adventures. He loved to travel and shared that love with his family. Tom’s absence will be felt by all who knew and loved him, and his legacy will continue within the souls of his beloved family, friends and the county he served so faithfully.

Tom is survived and missed by his loving wife Sheila (Potter) Pingry, his children, Tom Jr., Julie Shively (Al), Tonya Reed (Sean) and Dawn Coryea (Travis). His memory lives on through his 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held August 16th at the Ferdinand American Legion from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. EST. Friends and family are invited.

Tom will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
