The Parklands to close for prescribed burns on Wednesday, Sept. 10

A second prescribed burn of areas of The Parklands in Jasper is set to take place on Wednesday, September 10, starting around 2:30 p.m.

Controlled burns were used in 2024 to help the native flora flourish, and won the Parklands and Jasper Park & Recreation Department an award for innovative conservation practices within city limits by a municipality.

In the designated burn areas, invasive species are choking out the growth of native wildflowers. The goal is to increase the growth and diversity of native species by controlling these invasive species. The most effective way to do this is with a controlled burn. Our native species are very tolerant of fire and have extremely long roots that cannot be affected by the flames. The prairie floor will be opened up to allow more direct sunlight, giving the wildflowers room to grow.

Access to The Parklands will close on Wednesday, September 10, from both the Culver’s and 15th Street entrances starting at 1:30 p.m. Park goers are asked to remove their vehicles and vacate the premises by 1:30 p.m. for preparations to begin.

All entrances, including vehicular and walking, will remain closed after the fire until further notice. Access will not be permitted from either the Culver’s or 15th Street entrances.
