Dubois County Highway Superintendent receives statewide award
The Indiana Association of County Commissioner (IACC) is pleased to announce that Steve Berg was selected IACC’s 2011 Outstanding Highway Supervisor of the Year. The award is in recognition of his contributions made to county government throughout his years of public service.
Steve Berg Dubois County Highway Supervisor has a background in construction and it has enabled him to effectively manage the duties and responsibilities of his position. He has improved the common construction practices in pavement patching and implemented a policy manual for the use of county right-of-way. With increasing material costs and decreasing county budgets, he has managed to find ways to get more work done with fewer employees. Whether it is by computerizing the daily tasks of the highway crews or utilizing tri-axle trucks to increase the amount of rock one employee can haul, he has always looked for ways the department can be more efficient and utilize the decreased budgets more effectively. When a tornado struck another nearby county, he took several members of the highway department to assist in recovery efforts.
The award was presented during the IACC’s 2011 Annual Conference, the largest gathering of County Commissioners in the state. The four day conference included 15 different workshops, and breakout sessions that were designed specifically for county commissioners and support staff.
County Commissioners also had informal opportunities to discuss issues with their colleagues from other areas of the state. Officials met at the Sheraton Hotel, Keystone at the Crossing in Marion County to discuss and offer solutions for issues facing local governments. Representatives from public agencies, private entities, universities and local elected officials addressed such issues as:
- Working together for a better Government
- 2012 IACC Legislative issues
- Economic Development
- Health Care Solutions
- How will Indiana advance its transportation infrastructure were among the many sessions offered
