State Road 162 crash sends two to hospital

A crash on State Road 162 sent two people to the hospital and destroyed two vehicles Wednesday morning.

According to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department, on November 15, 2023, at approximately 6:42 a.m., the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a personal injury accident with entrapment on State Road 162 just south of Old State Road 162.

Responding deputies determined that Brady L. Lizana, of Cannelton, was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Cruze northbound on State Road 162 when he allegedly fell asleep, causing his vehicle to travel left of center and sideswipe an oncoming 2008 Volvo semi with a trailer.

The impact of the accident caused Lizana’s vehicle to go into a spin and continue north, striking a 2010 Volkswagen Routon traveling south behind the Volvo.

The Chevrolet ended up on the east side of State Road 162, facing east. The Volvo came to a final rest on the west shoulder of State Road 162, facing south, while the Volkswagen came to a final rest in the southbound lane of State Road 162, also facing south.

Two of the three drivers were transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital for treatment, while the third driver refused treatment on the scene.

Lizana was cited for driving left of center, and the driver of the Volkswagen, Chery Martineau of Evansville, was cited for a learner’s permit violation.

The Chevrolet and the Volkswagen were considered total losses in the crash.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the St. Anthony Fire Department and First Responders, Memorial Hospital EMS, Ferdinand Police Department, Bergs Wrecker Service, Uebelhor and Sons Wrecker Service and Ruxers Heavy Truck Wrecker Service.

State Road 162 was down to one lane for approximately an hour and a half.

The sheriff’s office did not release the names of the two individuals sent to the hospital.
