St. Joseph Church terrazzo floor wins award

St. Joseph Church of Jasper was one of 15 sites recognized by the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association for the church’s terrazzo floor.

Midwest Terrazzo Company of Evansville, Indiana, was the terrazzo contractor who, along with the project architect, Entheos Architects, and the design committee, created the multi-colored configuration for the new floor.

St. Joseph Church was built in 1880, and a $10 million renovation was completed in December 2022. Though not part of the original plan, an unforeseen structural problem required the removal of the existing floor during the renovation.

The new terrazzo floor with distinctive medallion inlays inspired by the patterns in the sainted glass windows emerged as the outcome. The floor was completely created on-site. For three months, an installation crew from Midwest Terrazzo, led by Leroy Polombit, worked on installing a highly polished, decorative floor that complements the church’s theological and historical aspects.

Most sites recognized by the association are larger structures such as airports, schools, and businesses.

The owner of Midwest Terrazzo, Graham Wink, conveyed that it was a great honor to be a part of the historical church renovation.

St. Joseph Church is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
