Southwest Schools: Maple Park demolition bids approved
The Southwest Dubois School Board passed two bids for the demolition of the old classroom section of the Maple Park Elementary School Monday night.
The building now serves as the corporation headquarters and the classrooms have set empty for several years, slowly decaying and becoming a health hazard for the community.
The base bids had two parts. The first for the classroom section demolition, site clearing, earth moving and seeding of the lot. The second for the general construction and remodeling that includes a wall to seal off the access to the torn down section.
The base bid accepted by the board for the demolition was from Cooper Rail Service of Huntingburg in the amount of $125,295.00. That’s considerably less than the estimated bid of around $180,000.00.
The second base bid for the remodeling of the wall was awarded to Quality Craft of Dale in the amount of $15,120.00 plus the alternate of $10,500 to install brick instead of siding on the outside of the building to match the existing external brick.
The board also allowed up to a $600.00 performance bond for Quality Craft.
In all the total project will come in at just over $151,000.00, a significant savings for the school corporation, which comes at a time when money is tight.
The board also passed two recommendations by superintendent Mike Eineman.
One for installation of a new double serving line for the high school and middle school cafeteria. The lowest bid came in at $92,000 for nine appliances including installation. These are to replace the ones original to the building when it opened in 1973.
The board also approved the installation of 25 access points — five in high school and 20 in middle school— for $14,120. And the purchase of 40 HP ProDesktops for teachers and staff members for $19,240
He reported that the use of computers that use online applications is bogging down their system and the desktop units would be loaded with local software and files, which would reduce the demands on the network. He also told the board that he is awaiting quotes for new wireless access points to support a one-to-one computing model for students.
