Southridge honors two teachers with inaugural award

This year marks the beginning of a new and meaningful tradition at Southwest Dubois County Schools: the annual recognition of two outstanding Teachers of the Year.
Chosen for their ability to spark a love of learning in students of all abilities and backgrounds, these exceptional educators set high expectations and foster impressive academic growth in their classrooms.
SW Dubois is also grateful to Freedom Bank for graciously partnering with us in this inaugural year. As a gesture of appreciation for their dedication and impact, Freedom Bank generously awarded $500 to each of our honored teachers. This celebration sets the tone for many more years of recognizing the incredible work of our educators.

Southwest Dubois County Schools proudly announces Kyle Baseden as the 2025 Secondary Teacher of the Year and Lindsey Riehle as the 2025 Elementary Teacher of the Year.
“Walking into Kyle Baseden’s science classroom at Southridge Middle School feels more like entering a high-energy learning lab than a traditional classroom,” said Southridge Middle School Principal Mrs. Lange in her nomination letter. “Like a master conductor, Baseden orchestrates lessons that blend rigorous content with hands-on experiments, critical thinking, and vibrant student discussions. Under his guidance, even the most reluctant learners are drawn into purposeful engagement—eager to question, explore, and contribute. With firm expectations and constant encouragement, he creates an environment where learning thrives and disruptions are rare.”
She further said that Baseden’s impact extends well beyond his classroom walls.
He serves in multiple leadership roles, including as the building’s technology representative, Student Lighthouse coach, co-chair of the Culture Committee, and member of the building leadership team. He also coaches the SMS E-Sports team, an effort he helped launch after securing a competitive grant, setting up the necessary equipment, and building a successful program from the ground up.
“His passion for STEM education and high-ability programming has led to the development of numerous enrichment opportunities, including a summer high-ability camp, a robotics camp, and an after-school robotics club,” said Mrs. Lange. “As a forward-thinking leader, he contributes meaningfully to shaping curriculum, school-wide initiatives, and future-ready programming.”
There was no hesitation in nominating Kyle Baseden for this honor. His contributions to our students, our school culture, and our future are immeasurable, she finished.

Huntingburg Elementary Principal Mrs. Anselment’s nomination of Mrs. Riehle acknowledged her dedication and leadership.
“A dedicated fourth-grade teacher, Lindsey Riehle is known for her tireless dedication to student success,” said Mrs. Anselment. “Her classroom is a vibrant, academically focused space where no instructional minute is wasted. Through engaging lessons and high expectations, Riehle ensures that every student—regardless of background or ability—has the opportunity to thrive.”
Lindsey’s influence extends far beyond her own classroom. She is a natural leader, guiding her grade-level team with collaboration, care, and a shared vision for instructional excellence. As co-chair of the Student Lighthouse Team, she helps empower students to grow as leaders and take pride in their school community.
She is also a driving force behind the school’s implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework for meeting the diverse needs of all learners. Through her coaching and support, she has helped fellow educators adopt more inclusive, flexible teaching practices, making a meaningful difference across the school.
“Families and students alike know Riehle as a trusted advocate—someone who genuinely invests in each child’s long-term success,” said Mrs. Anselment. “Her relationships with students don’t end when they leave her classroom; she continues to be a supportive, encouraging presence for former students as well.”
Lindsey Riehle is the kind of teacher who elevates an entire school. Her leadership, heart, and vision make her an extraordinary educator and a role model for us all.
The selection of Kyle Baseden and Lindsey Riehle as the inaugural Secondary and Elementary Teachers of the Year highlights the extraordinary talent and dedication within Southwest Dubois County Schools. With the generous support of Freedom Bank and the launch of this annual recognition program, the district proudly celebrates educators who go above and beyond, shaping lives today and inspiring the leaders of tomorrow.
