Southeast Dubois School Board Meeting

Summer programs were discussed at the Southeast Dubois School Board Meeting Thursday night.

Superintendent Rick Allen talked about the events lined up for the summer and says that the State Department 100 % funding helps the school to be able to offer the programs from year to year.

“We’ve always offered remediation and band and all the sports programs that have camps – team camps. But we’re also including more English language arts reading and mathematics instruction over the summer, ” Allen explained. “Our principals will have our libraries open occasionally over the summer for kids to exchange books. They also give them a reading challenge over the summer. So, yes, it’s becoming more and more where we’re involved year around.”

Allen acknowledged that a lot is done during summer, which appears to make the case for year around school, but he also says that the break between May 22 and August 7 is important too. “It’s nice to hit that reset button to let our maintenance people to reset our buildings, floors and clean the facilities.”

He also says that there’s not much going on in July for students.

The summer break is important for another reason: facilities projects. And Southeast Dubois Schools has some large ones on the list this year.

A roof replacement project at the high school building is probably the largest at just over $200,000.00 and will be done by Hedinger Roofing.

Another project is wetlands wastewater treatment system at Pine Ridge Elementary.  Allen says that the new system will save the school corporation about $16,000.00 per year.

Allen also reports that new Chromebooks are being ordered for the Middle School for one-to-one distribution to students.
