Solid Waste District to hold Solar Open House at Process Center’s “Last Chance Corral”

The Dubois County Solid Waste District is holding an open house to showcase the new off-grid solar installation in our Last Chance Corral at the District’s Process Center from 9 to 11 a.m. EDT on Saturday, October 3.

Josh Ayers, of Blue River Solar, will be on site to show the small system and answer questions about all sizes of off and on grid solar installations.

“We are excited to be able to showcase a small off-grid solar installation! This is the perfect size for a cabin, so come on out and see if solar might be for you!” says SWMD Director Carla Striegel-Winner.

Additionally, visitors may walk or drive up the hill from the Process Center and check out the RC Flyers flying field and their solar powered remote control airplane battery charger. Weather permitting; members will be doing demo flights for the public.

The Last Chance Corral is a new 18 x 30 carport style structure that houses items that were brought to the process center to be disposed of but are being diverted from the landfill. Any Dubois County resident may “shop” in the Last Chance Corral. Items are free, but to be used by residents (not re-sold). Staff record how many pounds of items the resident takes. Last year over a ton of items were diverted to reuse, and with the new Last Chance Corral, the District hopes to double their diversion rate. The project is part of a grant through Indiana’s Recycling Market and Development Program.

SWMD Director Carla Striegel-Winner will be on site to talk about the rest of the grant project and answer questions about the District’s services as well.

Face coverings are required while on site. The event takes place at the District’s Process Center, located at 1103 South 350 West, just outside of Jasper.
