Snow days could lengthen school for some
The weather the last two weeks took a hit out of Dubois County school corporations’ snow days.
Students across the county missed three days due to snow and ice. Few, if any, of the kids complained about the extended five day vacation but if more snow days are needed, the school calendar may be extended into summer vacation.
Greater Jasper School Corporation has five snow days built into their school calendar. Losing three of those days so early in the season has forced them to bring students back to school from winter break a day earlier on Thursday, January 2nd. School had been scheduled to start up on Friday, January 3rd. Jasper will also be using Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20th and February 17th, to make up for those lost days.
Southwest Dubois County School Corporation is coming back to school the Friday after New Years Day rather than the next Monday. February 17th, normally a day off for Presidents Day, will now see students in school and on April 18th the students will use up another designated emergency make-up day. Anymore snow days will have to be tacked onto the end of the year.
Northeast Dubois County School Corporation is also back in school on Friday, January 3. The students will then make up the other two days they missed in February; one on Valentines Day, February 14th, and the other on the 18th — a built in snow day. They have six days built into the calendar with one tacked on at the end of the school year.
Southeast Dubois County School Corporation returns to school January 2nd — a designated snow makeup day. They will also attend school on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 20th and Valentines Day, February 14th, both designated snow make-up days. Northeast has 11 snow days built into their calendar including four at the end of the school year.
