He was born April 16, 1918 near Birdseye, IN, the son of Herman A. & Mary Rozella (Schircliffe) Niehaus. Smith graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1937, joined the U.S. Army in 1939 and served until 1945.

He was united in marriage to Nannetta Klusmeier on July 1, 1945 in Stendal, IN.

He re-enlisted in 1947 and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1965.

He and Nan liked the Army life and enjoyed the travel, especially in Germany and Western Europe. Following his retirement they moved to Stendal where they lived for 41 years; and for the past 6 years they made their home at the Holiday Village in Evansville.

Smith was instrumental in establishing the Stendal Water Corporation and served in various capacities for 23 years including secretary of the board, meter reading and billing.

He worked with 4-H clubs in Pike County which included administrative work and judging fair exhibits; and also worked for the Department of Natural Resources.

Smith was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church and was active in various activities at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Stendal for many years.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Nannetta “Nan” Niehaus, who died July 26, 2012; five brothers; and two sisters.

He is survived by his sister, Rozella Niehaus of Frankfort, IN and by nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nephews.

Funeral services for Smith Niehaus will be held at 1:00 p.m., (E.S.T.), on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial to follow at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Stendal. The Holland American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites. Pastor Ed Wicks will officiate the services.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., on Thursday, the day of the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Stendal, IN.
