Sister LaVerne Scheller, 94
Sister LaVerne Scheller, 94, of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, died at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 2013, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Indiana.
A native of St. Wendel, Indiana, Sister LaVerne was born November 8, 1918, the second of three children born to Ed and Rosa (Maurer) Scheller. She entered the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand in 1945 and made her monastic profession of vows in 1947.
She is survived by nieces, nephews, and members of her religious community. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, Alvin and Freeman Scheller.
Sister LaVerne was a teacher for more than 40 years. She taught at Earle C. Clements Job Corps in Morganfield, Kentucky; at Resurrection, Christ the King, St. Theresa, St. Benedict, Holy Redeemer, Holy Rosary, and St. Joseph, all in Evansville; and in Indianapolis and Washington, Indiana. She served as mail clerk and in other supportive services at the monastery, including the ministry of prayer.
Visitation will be at the monastery on Wednesday, March 20, from 2-7 p.m. EDT and on Thursday, March 21, from 1 to 4:15 p.m. EDT. A wake service will be Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. The funeral Mass will be on Thursday, March 21, at 4:30 p.m. EDT in the monastery church, followed by burial in the monastery cemetery.
