Democrat State Senator Lindel Hume of Princeton has announced he will not seek re-election to the District 48 seat.

Hume called Democrat chairs across the district last week and then made the announcement official at the Pike County Democrat St. Patrick’s Day Dinner on Saturday night.

Hume has been in the Senate for 40 years.

The House of Representatives recently approved a proposal authored by Hume that would allow veterans to become certified as emergency medical providers if they have previous medical training.

That law is awaiting the Governor’s signature.

Mark Messmer is the current House Representative for District 63. He has stated that he will be running for the seat Hume is vacating in the next election.

Meanwhile, the Democrats have new leadership in the state.

A state central committee election on Saturday produced John Zody as party Chairman. Zody replaces out-going Chair, Dan Parker. Cordelia Lewis Burks was elected as vice-chair.

Committee members also voted unanimously to honor all who have service in the Indiana Democrat party to expand all voting rights to the Indiana Democrat Party constituency caucuses, deputy chairs and finance chair.
