Scammers use family members to scare residents in Dubois County
The Dubois County Sheriffs Department took a report about an attempted scam Wednesday.
According to Deputy Stuart Wilson, the sheriff’s department received reports of a scam involving residents of rural Huntingburg. The residents reported they had received a phone call that their grandson had gotten in some trouble in Mexico for possessing a small amount of narcotics. During the call, the scammer had a person who was impersonating their grandson speak to the residents.
The residents decided to contact their relatives and were able to verify that they were not in Mexico.
They did not fall victim to the attempts.
The sheriff’s department issued a reminder to never give out any personal or banking information over the phone. Residents can contact the local police department if they are unsure if a call may be a scam or not.
