Sandra L. Opitz, 69, Huntingburg

Sandra L. Opitz, 69, of Huntingburg, passed away at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at home with her beloved husband by her side.

Sandra was born in Rome, New York, on December 26, 1956, to Robert L. and Helen Ruth Mary (Stevenson) Britton.

She married Chris Opitz on March 25, 2011.

She wore many career hats during her life, but enjoyed her years serving others as a nurse the most. She derived great joy out of helping everyone around her. She was an active member of Crosspoint Fellowship Church in Jasper. She was a lifelong learner, especially interested in topics relating to eating and living for optimum health.

She and Chris relocated to Huntingburg from western New York in 2020. Sandy absolutely loved this area, and she had so many Christian friends here from several different churches. She told her husband many times that the people here are so warm and friendly, and she wished she had grown up here in this wonderful area.

Sandra is survived by her husband, Chris Opitz of Huntingburg; son, Rodger (Karen) Merritt of Rochester, N.Y.; four stepchildren, Jamie Valle, Kyle Opitz, Brittany Lewis, all of western N.Y., and Eric Opitz of Atlanta, Ga.; father, Robert Britton Sr. of New York; and several siblings, three grandchildren, Alexis Dianne, Lily Merritt, and Jack Merritt; six step-grandchildren, Anthony and Nicholas Valle, Alexa and Juliana Opitz, Victoria and Alexander Lewis, as well as many friends.  

She is preceded in death by her mother and son, James Merritt.

A Celebration of Life for Sandra L. Opitz will be held at Crosspoint Fellowship Church in Jasper, Indiana, at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026.

A burial will be held at a later date in Mayo Cemetery in Duff, Indiana.
