Samuel W. Oxley, 82

Samuel W. Oxley, 82, of Jasper, passed away at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2015, at home.

Sam was born in Birdseye on November 27, 1932 to Thomas and Lena (Holzbog) Oxley. He married Joan Gerlach on June 6, 1957 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg.

Sam was a Navy veteran, serving in the NMCB1 Construction Battalion in Greenland, North Africa and Cuba.

Sam retired as the owner of Sam Oxley and Co., Inc. Starting out of high school he previously worked for; Olinger Construction, Mulzer Crushed Stone, Ralph Rogers Company, Hunt Paving Company, and Mc Mahon O’Conner Company. After retirement, he raised cattle.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the VFW Post #673, The St. Anthony American Legion Post #493 and the Jasper Knights of Columbus.

He served on the board of BIC (Build Indiana Council), the Region 15 Economic Development Council, and was a supervisor of the local USDA Soil and Water Conservation Council.

He enjoyed watching the Reds, Pacer’s , and Indianapolis Colts, and spending time with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Oxley of Jasper; one daughter, Chelle Cherry and husband Mike of Huntingburg; one son, Harold Oxley and wife Grace of Loogootee; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, May Atkins of Birdseye and Ruth Lohn of Birdseye; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding him in death were brothers; Everett, Thurman, and Robert Oxley; and two sisters; Hazel Leonard and infant Frieda Inez Oxley.

Funeral services for Samuel Oxley will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. The VFW Post #673 will conduct military graveside rites.

Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2015, at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper.
