Same-sex marriages not recognized by the state

The general counsel to Governor Mike Pence has issued a memo to state agencies instructing them to act as if a federal judge’s ruling striking down Indiana’s ban on same-sex marriage had not been issued.

In the memo issued through the office of Mark G. Ahearn, chief counsel, all executive branches are instructed that the Indiana Code (31-11-1-1) regarding same-sex marriage “is in full force and effect and executive branch agencies are to execute their functions as though the U.S. District Court Order of June 25, 2014 had not been issued.”

Here is that memo – status-of-same-sex-marriages.

Federal district Judge Richard Young struck down Indiana’s law regarding same-sex marriage on June 25. Two days later, a stay was issued on appeal by Attorney General Greg Zoeller.

At least three couples were issued marriage certificates in Dubois County during that time.
