Sacred music concert set for October 6 at Saint Meinrad

The Saint Meinrad Institute for Sacred Music, St. Meinrad, IN, will present its inaugural concert on Friday, October 6, 2023, at 7:45 p.m. Central Time in the Archabbey Church.

The concert titled, “As Before, So Evermore: Celebrating 1,000 Years of Sacred Music at Saint Meinrad Archabbey” will be performed by monks and other musicians from Saint Meinrad and Cleveland-based professional early music ensemble, Trobár.

The program will feature music taken from Saint Meinrad’s medieval manuscript collection, highlighting chants that have only survived at Saint Meinrad and have not been heard in centuries. Selections include the oldest leaf in the collection, which is approximately 1,000 years old from the vicinity of Saint Meinrad’s Swiss motherhouse, Einsiedeln Abbey.

The performance will also include music sung in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Saint Meinrad’s German-speaking monastic community, as well as pieces in English written after the Second Vatican Council by monks of Saint Meinrad. The concert will connect the modern Institute for Sacred Music in southern Indiana to the musical and monastic roots near the heart of the earliest sources of musical notation.
