Sabor Cubano opens in Jasper

Evelio Otero and Yslay Gomez have opened Sabor Cubano in Jasper.

Family connections to the area brought Evelio Otero and his wife, Yuslay Gomez, to Jasper to open Sabor Cubano on Brucke Strasse.

While following in his father’s footsteps to create his restaurant in Miami, Florida, Evelio found the cost exorbitant. Fortunately, his sister, Natalys Medina, mentioned opportunities in Southern Indiana, where she lived, and he decided to investigate.

Working through a realtor, Evelio met with Clarion Pointe owner Hemang Shah, who had a space ready for a new restaurant connected to his hotel. The former Great Wall location had been empty since the owners closed a few years ago.

After about a month of renovations and some setbacks, Evelio and Yuslay opened their doors to the public earlier this month.

The refurbished and renewed restaurant offers a buffet featuring Evelio and Yuslay’s Cuban recipes, including variations of plantains, rice, beef, chicken, beans and vegetables, as well as ceviche, salad fixings and a variety of ice cream options. On weekends, they plan on adding more options, including lamb dishes.

Cuban food is a mixture of Spanish, African, and Taino with Caribbean influence in spices and flavors. It is different from Central and South American cuisine.

According to Evelio, the recipes will rotate daily, and so far, the food has been a hit with guests.

Evelio loves providing great food and service and looks forward to bringing his and his wife’s special recipes to the community.

Sabor Cubano is located at 272 Brucke Strasse, next to the theatre. It is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Evelio mentioned they may adjust the hours based on the restaurant’s traffic.

You can contact the restaurant at 812-556-0269.

The new restaurant also features a new bar with multiple televisions—televisions are spaced around the dining room as well. Evelio has applied for a liquor license and plans to host a special celebration when approved.
