Roger A. Eckert, 79, Stendal

Roger A. Eckert, 79, of Stendal, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Deaconess Memorial in Jasper, Indiana.

He was born June 25, 1947, to Theodore and Mary (Norric) Eckert in Huntingburg.

He married Sharon (Carter) Eckert on April 4, 1968, and from there, they went on to have four children.

Roger was a Union Coal Miner who worked at Old Ben #2 for over 40 years. He was a member of the Eagles in Huntingburg, a Stendal volunteer firefighter and a member of the Jaycees in Holland, Indiana, for several years.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish, a welder, a mechanic, and loved to fix anything he could get his hands on. He loved his Western television shows and Home Improvement.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Eckert of 58 years; his daughters, Ladonna (Terry) Griffith, Gretchen (Randy) Arterberry, and Dorinda (Brad) Payne; son, Jeremy Eckert; brother, Mike (Pat) Eckert; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his stepbrother, Jim Roettger; and stepsisters, Lola Philpot and Carol Astrike.

In accordance with Rogers wishes, he will be cremated. Harris Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
