Robert F. Whitten, Sr., 92

Robert F. Whitten, Sr., age 92, of Huntingburg, passed away at 5:30 a.m., Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper.

He was born October 10, 1919 in Huntingburg, Indiana to Elijah and Mary (Beasley) Whitten. He was united in marriage to Imelda L. Lasher on November 10, 1949. Robert was employed by the Huntingburg Furniture Company as Manager of the English Furniture Works in English, Indiana for 25 years and then Robert Whitten Sales, Inc. from 1964-1998. He served in the United States Army Air Corp four years during World War II. He was a staff sergeant and worked as a radio operator based in the Caribbean and South American Theatre.

He was a member of: St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he served on the finance committee for many years and was past president of the Holy Name Society; Y.M.I. Club; V.F.W. Post #2366; St. Vincent de Paul Society; and Knights of Columbus. He was past president of the Huntingburg School Board; was the last living Charter Member of the Huntingburg Country Club; and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He was preceded in death by: one son who died in infancy, John Whitten; and one sister, Maella Westby.

Funeral services for Robert F. Whitten, Sr. will be held at 10:00 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, on Monday, December 5, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery (Huntingburg). The V.F.W. Post #2366 Memorial Detail will conduct military graveside rites.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday. A parish rosary prayer service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: The Huntingburg Little League or St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg.
