Remembering 9/11

About 40 people — veterans, firefighters, police officers and civilian supporters — walked 11 miles from the Huntingburg Veterans Memorial to Memorial Bridge in Jasper as part of the third annual 9/11 Remembrance Walk hosted by Team Red, White and Blue. Photos by Matt Crane.
The group made its way north on U.S. 231 out of Huntingburg Sunday morning. Passerbyers waved and honked encouragement as the group marched along.
Jasper Volunteer Firefighters Henry Calderon and Nick Nowakowski walked with the group in honor of those who lost their lives in 9/11.
The group stopped at each mile and did nine repetitions of an exercise. This was mile three and the group performed nine two-step repetitions of high knees. The firefighters wore full turnout gear for the walk and during the exercises. 343 firefighters were killed during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. 60 police officers, eight paramedics and first responders also lost their lives in the attacks.
Jasper volunteer firefighter Greg Vonderheide adjusted Ferdinand volunteer firefighter Doug Lindauer’s tank harness during one of the stops on the 9/11 Remembrance Walk Sunday.
