Red Cross to open two cooling stations in Jasper

In response to the expected hot weather in the area for the rest of the week, the American Red Cross has plans to open up several cooling stations in Jasper.

For those seeking relief from the heat, cooling locations will be open in Dubois County at the Jasper City Hall Building in the basement and the Arnold F. Habig Community Center on St. Charles Street. The Red Cross will provide drinks and snacks at both locations. The hours will be 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on both days. The Red Cross said it would re-evaluate the need on Friday to determine if further action is necessary.

Dubois County Red Cross Director Jason Bradshaw says that they will monitor the use of the two locations in Jasper and that if the need arises, they will look into opening up more cooling centers.

Red Cross officials are cautioning citizens to take action to prevent heat- related illnesses. They say that the elderly and very young are the most susceptible to problems dealing with the heat. Signs of heat-related illnesses include nausea, dizziness, flushed or pale skin, heavy sweating and headaches.
