Reclaiming Southwest Soils workshop for landowners working with reclaimed mine ground

Southwest Indiana—Soil and Water Conservation Districts from Dubois, Knox, Warrick, Pike, Gibson, and Spencer Counties are partnering to host the Reclaiming Southwest Soils Workshop on August 11, 2026, a region-wide educational event dedicated to helping landowners and managers improve productivity and ecological health on reclaimed mine ground.

The workshop will take place at the Lynnville Community Center in Lynnville, Indiana, and will bring together conservation partners, technical specialists, and local landowners to explore practical, on-the-ground solutions tailored to formerly mined landscapes.

Participants will learn how cover crops can rebuild soil structure, how airborne invasive species control technology is transforming mine-land restoration, and how strategic reclamation practices can lead to more resilient and productive ground. The event also includes a unique historical highlight: attendees will hear the story of “Big Kate,” a legendary dragline, and will have the rare opportunity to see the equipment up close.

“Mine ground presents unique challenges, but with the right tools and management practices, it can become highly productive again,” organizers noted. “This workshop brings together experience, innovation, and collaboration to support landowners across southwest Indiana.”
