Radio-controlled aircraft return to Jasper skies for annual fun-fly

Jasper–RC pilots from across southern Indiana and beyond will gather in Jasper on Saturday, August 1, as the Jasper RC Flyers host their Annual Fun-Fly.

The event is a summer staple held during Jasper’s Strassenfest weekend, drawing model aviation enthusiasts for a day of flying and fellowship. Flying starts at 10:00 a.m. Eastern at the Jasper RC Flyers flying field, 1103 S. 350 W., Jasper.

RC Pilots from neighboring clubs will gather for a day of flying and friendships. Spectators can stop by to watch, for free.

Visitors will see everything from scale airplanes to aerobatic models in the air, and can talk with pilots about a hobby that’s been around since the early days of American aviation.

Food will be available throughout the day. One of the event’s most popular traditions, the Candy Drop, returns too: at noon, an RC airplane showers candy over the flying field for the kids.

“Our Annual Fun-Fly is one of our favorite days of the year,” said Jasper RC Flyers President Jeremy Church. “It’s an opportunity to welcome fellow RC pilots from around the region, reconnect with friends, and share our hobby with the community. Whether you’ve been flying for decades or have never seen an RC airplane up close, everyone is welcome.”

The fly-in caps off a strong summer for the club. More than 60 people attended the Jasper RC Flyers Open House in June, where club instructors gave over 40 introductory buddy-box flights to first-time pilots ranging from age 4 to adults.

The Jasper RC Flyers are chartered through the Academy of Model Aeronautics and offer beginner flight instruction throughout the season. New members are welcome.

Club members meet every Tuesday evening starting at 5:30 p.m. Eastern for flying and training nights. Visitors are welcome then too.
