A 6-mile pursuit through Dubois and Pike counties late Tuesday night ended with a Grandview man behind bars.

At about 10:05 p.m., Trooper Ross Johnson observed a green 1996 GMC Jimmy speeding  (72 mph in a 55 mph zone) on State Road 161, near Old State Road 64 north of Holland.

Johnson pulled behind the GMC and attempted to conduct a traffic stop when the driver turned on Old State Road 64. When Johnson activated his emergency lights to attempt to initiate a traffic stop, the GMC accelerated away.

Johnson followed and during the pursuit, observed the GMC make an unsafe pass on a double yellow line, drive down the middle of the roadway, and attempt to evade Trooper Johnson at speeds nearing 100 miles per hour.

After reaching Stendal in Pike County, the GMC left the roadway, struck a concrete bridge, and continued to flee.

A short time later, the GMC left the roadway a second time, crashing in a ditch. The driver, Matthew R. Jennings, 26, Grandview, jumped out of the vehicle and ran from the scene but Johnson gave chase and caught Jennings.

Jennings was lodged without further incident in the Pike County Jail on charges of Level 6 felony resisting law Enforcement and class B misdemeanor reckless driving.
