Pursuit ends with apparent suicide
A man being pursued by several law enforcement agencies ended his life own life after a more than 60-mile pursuit on Interstate 64 Monday evening.
According to state police, the incident began at about 7 p.m. when the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department received a report of someone breaking into a shed in the Green Meadows Trailer Court in Corydon. The officers thought the suspect was also a suspect in a Floyd County investigation.
A Harrison County deputy responded to the scene and when he arrived, the suspect was attempting to flee in a silver sedan. The deputy attempted to convince the suspect to stop, according to police, but he fled the area on State Road 135. He then entered the westbound lane of I-64.
Harrison County deputies, along with an officer with the Corydon Police Department, Indiana Conservation Officers, and Indiana State Police, joined in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
As the pursuit continued westbound at speeds reaching 115 miles per hour, a State Trooper attempted to deploy a tire deflation device at the 86-mile marker but was unsuccessful.
The pursuit continued through Crawford and Perry counties into Dubois County where Ferdinand Police deployed tire deflation devices, flattening the front right tire.
The suspect exited I-64 at the 63-mile marker (Ferdinand exit) and re-entered the interstate in the eastbound lane.
A Harrison County deputy deployed his tire deflation device near the 72-mile marker in Perry County, flattening the remaining three tires. The suspect continued east to the 79-mile marker, the Tell City exit, where he slowed down to cross the median in a paved crossover.
Officers believe at this point, the suspect fired a single self-inflicted gunshot. The vehicle coasted across the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 and stopped north of the roadway.
The driver was pronounced deceased by the Perry County Coroner. The name of the driver will be released at a later time.
The incident is under investigation by detectives with Indiana State Police.
