Precious Blood releases balloon rosary in honor of the Month of Mary

Principal Joe Brake (red shirt) looks on as Nancy Sternberg works with the other school staff, PTO members, and volunteer moms to get the rosary into position.

Jasper-On Monday, October 24, Precious Blood Elementary School had planned on releasing a rosary made of 59 balloons.

The plan came about when Mary Ramirez found a video online depicting a similar release of balloons in the shape of a rosary in Chicago. She forwarded the video to Fr. Gary Kaiser and he quickly e-mailed her back saying the church should do it with the students at the school in honor of the Month of Mary.

The school worked with Funtime Costumes in Jasper to build the approximately 15 foot long rosary. A cardboard cross with all the names of the Precious Blood 5th Graders was attached and two strands of 12 pound fishing line with 1200 feet of line were tied to the rosary. The plan called for the school to assemble in the field outside the school and the balloon rosary would be slowly allowed to rise above the field; as you can see above it didn’t quite work out that way.

As one child yelled “It’s free” and another child told Principal Joe Brake, “The balloons are taking our prayers up to Jesus in Heaven”, the rosary floated from view.

  1. neat idea in theory only. i can only imagine all of the places/things that the balloons and fishing line could get wrapped around or caught in.
