Pothole patching operations scheduled for I-64

The Indiana Department of Transportation reported shallow pothole patching work on Interstate 64 in Crawford, Dubois and Perry Counties is beginning Tuesday, Jan. 19.

INDOT maintenance crews will shut down one lane in various locations for two days at a time while the patching operation takes place. Work will be performed in both the east and westbound lanes. One lane of traffic in either direction will be open at all times. Work is expected to last until the end of January, weather permitting.

Potholes form when water seeps into cracks on the roadway, freezes and thaws. This combined with normal highway traffic causes the layers of asphalt to loosen. INDOT make patching a priority, especially after snow and ice events. During the winter months asphalt plants are closed so a cold mixture is used to temporarily patch holes until a permanent patch can be made in the warmer months.
