Police: Remember the rules as children return to school

Indiana State Troopers will be hitting the road in the Jasper District this week to watch for bus stop arm violations.

Police will use high visibility enforcement to encourage motorists to stop for school buses. Enforcement action will be taken against those that don’t.

As the summer break comes to an end, students across southern Indiana are returning to school. With that, motorists should expect an increased amount of school bus traffic during the morning and afternoon.

Here is Indiana’s law concerning school buses, flashing lights, and stop arms.

If a school bus is stopped, has its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended, motorists approaching from any direction are required to stop. Even on multiple lane highways where there is no barrier or median separating lanes of traffic.

If motorists are on a highway that is divided by a barrier, such as a cable barrier, concrete wall, or grassy median, they only have to stop if they are on the same side as the bus.

Always be prepared to stop for a school bus and keep an eye out for children.
