Police release more information on Jasper shooting incident

Update: Curry has been preliminarily charged with murder.

Police have not announced what charges a Georgia man will face after he was involved in a shooting Thursday afternoon at the SureStay Hotel, 951 Wernsing Road, that resulted in the death of another man.

Police were called to the scene at 2:08 p.m. for the report of shots being fired. The victim had already been taken to the hospital by friends, and the suspect was arrested.

Investigators determined that Jakahri Keyshaun Curry, 20, of Macon, Ga., had been involved in a verbal dispute with Lawrence Jonte Walker, 27, of Cleveland, Ohio, in the parking lot of the SureStay. The verbal dispute escalated, and Curry ultimately brandished a firearm and shot Lawrence several times.

After the shooting, Curry retreated back in the SureStay Hotel. He was located and taken into custody by
officers with the Jasper Police Department without incident.

Lawrence ultimately succumbed to his injuries at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center.

This is an ongoing investigation and charging information will be released at a later time.

The Jasper Police Department thanked the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana State Police,
and the Dubois County Prosecutor’s Office for their assistance.
