Police departments warn of phone scams

The Huntingburg Police Department and the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office have received reports of a scammer calling residents and posing as police officers with their departments.

Huntingburg reported a scammer, most recently using the name “Sgt. Gill,” who was contacting residents to demand money and a hair sample.

The department stated they will never call to ask for money or a hair sample from a resident.

If you receive a suspicious call like this, hang up immediately and contact Dispatch at (812) 683-9111 to verify any legitimate concerns. NEVER give them your personal information.

While the name being used right now is “Sgt. Gill,” the scammer may easily change names in future calls.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office reported businesses are receiving calls from scammers posing as deputies asking to speak to employees. They said scammers were using the following names and numbers when they called. Deputy Burzak from 812-717-8071 and Lt. Stevens from 812-493-0389.

If one of our deputies needs to contact an employee, they will do so in person at the place of business, not by phone, the department reported.
