A man from Birdseye was subdued and placed in custody as he attempted to harm himself after a pursuit ended in the Jasper city limits

According to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, they were called to assist with a vehicle pursuit along with the Jasper City Police and Indiana State Police at about 10:51 a.m. Thursday.

According to Sgt. Stuart Wilson, the county received information about a medical situation at the Perry County Memorial Clinic in Bristow involving a male subject. He had come to the clinic claiming he was injured.

When medical personnel attempted to assist him, he became highly uncooperative, combative and was acting erratically. He fled the clinic at a high rate of speed in a red utility work truck.

Deputies were told the man was possibly suicidal.

Local law enforcement received information that the subject was traveling north on SR 162 from Santa Claus.

A Dubois County Sheriff’s deputy intercepted the vehicle near County Road 700 South and State Road 162 just north of Ferdinand. According to authorities, the suspect vehicle was traveling more than 90 miles per hour.

The deputy attempted to make a traffic stop but the man did not stop. The pursuit continued northbound on S.R. 162 crossing State Road 64 and continuing north to Jasper at a high rate of speed.

Multiple law enforcement officers became involved in the pursuit. Once entering Jasper City limits on 3rd Avenue near Vincennes University Jasper Campus the suspect came to a sudden stop. According to police, he exited his vehicle and started stabbing himself with a metal wire. Officers quickly subdued the man; detaining him for his safety as well as the officers’ safety.

According to police, the man was believed to be under the influence of an unknown narcotic or drug. He was transported to Memorial Hospital by Memorial EMS for his injuries.

This case is under investigation, no criminal charges have been filed yet and all subjects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
