Parklands meeting will discuss framework for its future development

Next week, the consultants hired to develop a plan for The Parklands will present their proposal at a public meeting.

The Jasper Park and Recreation Board will host the meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at KlubHaus 61, 2031 Newton St.

The Parklands, located in the former Jasper Country Club, was purchased by the city in April of 2013. CityVisions and Gamble Associates, the firms hired for the Downtown Riverfront Master Plan, have developed the plan for its use.

Originally, it was thought the property could be used as a community campus hosting the library and Jasper Arts Department. To facilitate the community’s desires for the use of the park, the city held an open meeting with hosted by the consultants to shape the plan for the park. About 60 people met and completed an electronic survey to help shape the plan for the park.

Those questions and the results are presented in this slide show.

About 60 people attended the public meeting and answered the questions found in the slides above. Those that attended were members of the original advisory group, members of the community, neighbors to the property and city officials.

Here is a story on that meeting.

Members of the advisory committee who worked with Gamble Associates and CityVisions are listed here.

Through the meeting and continued interviews with other community members and neighbors to the park, the city decided to pursue a passive use of the land. The idea to house an arts center, library and water park was abandoned and drawings that included an amphitheater and more natural use of the land emerged from CityVisions and Gamble Associates. Here is a story about that decision.

The meeting next Tuesday evening will further define the framework for the future development of The Parklands.

Members of the Jasper Redevelopment Commission, the Jasper Common Council and the steering committee are expected to attend.
