Overturned trailer dumps hot asphalt south of Holland

A semi-trailer carrying hot asphalt tar overturned about near the I-64 ramp south of Holland on Tuesday afternoon.
Fire departments from Warrick County and Dubois County responded to the approximately 5500 gallon spill at about 4:15 p.m. According to the Warrick County Sheriff’s Department, the driver, Warren R. Zehe, was extricated from the semi and taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville with non-life threatening injuries.
The scene was closed for approximately two hours while crews cleared wreckage and dealt with the spill. Dams were put in place to contain the asphalt as it ran down into a concrete culvert. The cooled asphalt was removed by an environmental company from Evansville.
The Dubois and Warrick County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, Holland town marshall, Holland Fire Department, Dubois County Health Department and Indiana Department of Environmental Management responded to the scene. Warrick and Dubois County EMS and the Dubois County HAZMAT team also responded.
