Othmar “Ots” Mehling, 90, of Huntingburg, Indiana, passed away at 10:10 p.m., on Monday, January 19, 2015, at The Waters of Huntingburg nursing center in Huntingburg.

He was born August 6, 1924 in Ferdinand, Indiana, to John and Gertrude (Seger) Mehling.

He married Donna J. Birk on November 28, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg.

Mr. Mehling was a retired furniture factory machinist. He was a former semi-professional baseball league pitcher and went by the nickname of “Oats Mehling” when he played baseball locally. He was known for the time he struck out 21 consecutive batters in an exhibition game when he pitched for the Jasper Reds.

Othmar was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg and the Y.M.I. Club.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Romus Mehling and Cyril Mehling; and three sisters, Mildred Fleig, Clarissa Fischer and Estelle Wahl.

He is survived by his wife, Donna J. Mehling of Huntingburg.

Funeral services for Othmar “Ots” Mehling will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg.

He will be cremated following the Funeral Mass and his cremains will be interred at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Huntingburg at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 26, 2015.  Reverend Fr. Ryan Hilderbrand will officiate at the Funeral Mass.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday and also from 9:00-9:45 a.m. Saturday. A parish rosary prayer service, followed by a YMI memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to a favorite charity.
