Sara Kamman stumbled onto the Parker House on Fourth Street after coming back from working in New York. Just another serendipitous event leading up to the grand opening of the Single Thread Boutique, a trendy clothing store targeted to women of all ages, this Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

Sara didn’t land here accidentally though, the IU grad went to New York to work in the fashion industry and did have dreams of her own clothing boutique in the future. “I didn’t expect to be opening this now, not at my age,” she explained. “It was further down the road, but I am in a good position to open now.”

When Sara looked in the windows of the recently redecorated shop, the dream started to become a reality. “I just stopped while walking on Fourth Street and looked in the windows,” she said, “and the brick walls with the track lighting and the counter were all here. I loved the brick walls; it was perfect for what I envisioned.”

The next steps weren’t as easy, she completed a business plan, closed on the lease of the building, and then applied for the USDA Rural Development seed fund. She was approved for the revolving loan in December and has been purchasing and renovating since.

“This is a lot harder than you think,” Sara said. “I have been working so hard, but one night I was sitting at the counter looking around thinking ‘this is my store’. It was a great feeling.”

Besides the pride and joy of seeing the project move forward, Sara said she has really enjoyed purchasing the clothes that will be featured in the store. “Everything in here is good quality and different than other styles found in Dubois County.” She explained. “The brands are from smaller companies. I did a lot of research while I was in New York and I was attracted to the fit and the quality of these companies that I am carrying.”

The quality clothing she carries is also economical. “The most expensive piece in the store is $75.00,” she explained. “I have a great brand of jeans, Vigoss, that are good quality and very soft for $55.00.”

Sara has a broad vision for her business. She plans on bringing in men’s fashion and as she is successful would like to expand to other locations, but for now she is concentrating on creating an environment that her customers will feel welcoming. “On Saturday for the Grand Opening we will have coffee and bagels, but I always want to have that atmosphere that anyone can come in and try stuff on, have a cup of coffee, and not feel any pressure to buy something.” Sara said.

The store is welcoming, music plays from a nearby flatscreen TV and two high back chairs provide a comfortable place to sit while friends are trying on clothes. The aroma of coffee, brick walls, and attractive bright clothes fill the shop with an upbeat but warm atmosphere.

Sara will also offer private parties for birthdays, wine & cheese nights, and other special events.
