New scam threatens victims with arrest
A new scam hitting the area uses the threat of arrest to coerce victims to send money.
A Holland resident received a call from an individual stating there was a warrant for her arrest due to an outstanding loan that had been defaulted on. The caller told the victim she would be arrested unless she paid a fine.
To pay the fine the victim was instructed to purchase a prepaid credit card and to call the scammer back with the card’s information.
Although the victim retained the number the scammer used, many times these are attached to phone numbers based in foreign countries.
According to local law enforcement, scams occur almost every day and it is important to do some research before turning cash over to a stranger. In cases such as this, contact local law enforcement to run a search on the warrant for confirmation.
