New plaque honors county’s namesake; Toussant Dubois

plaqueA special dedication for a new plaque honoring Toussaint Dubois was held Monday afternoon at the Dubois County Courthouse.

The Dubois County Historical Society along with the Dubois County Commissioners placed the new plaque near the east entry of the Courthouse. In attendance from the Historical Society was Mary Ann Hayes, President and Lee Bilderback, Vice President, along with Dubois County historian Art Nordhoff.

“We in Dubois County are proud of our heritage. It is fitting that the day before the election, the week before Veteran’s Day, and just over a year into the beginning of the State’s bicentennial festivities, we celebrate a man for whom all of those days justly applies, Toussaint Dubois,” Bilderback said during the ceremony.

He added that the Historical Society felt that the county needed an appropriate memorial from its namesake to commemorate his life.

County Historian Nordhoff said of the memorial that it was a good addition to the other external memorials placed around the square because “one hundred years ago, the monument that sets right in front of us, was dedicated.”

According to Nordhoff, it was only right that Captain Dubois was brought in as part of the local center of government.

Nordhoff then thanked the three Dubois County Commissioners, Randy Fleck, Larry Vollmer and Doug Uebelhor for their support of the project.
